Why did CAA create a Home2Home Program?
Companion Animal Advocates has made a long term commitment to “promoting the rescue and adoption of homeless animals”. CAA saw a need, especially in this challenging economy, that families were having to re-home their pets because they no longer have the means to properly care for their animals anymore. Rather than see these family pets become part of the shelter system, CAA found a unique way to introduce these animals in need of homes to potential new families by helping to publicize the pet through our website, e-mail blasts, and circulation of flyers throughout the community. While CAA does not directly participate in the selection of an adopting family, CAA does provide publicity, resources and tools that allow both the adopter and the adoptee to have a positive adoption experience.
How do I know if I am ready to enroll my pet in the Home2Home Program?
Sometimes it is as easy as asking “what is the best thing for the animal”? If your answer is that the animal would be best cared for in a new home, the Home2Home Program might be right for your pet. Some common reasons families have for looking to find another home for their animal are: moving, not enough time or resources, expanding family, behavioral challenges and/or allergies. Other important questions to ask yourself are “what sort of home does my pet need”, “what do I need to do to make my pet appeal to adopters”, “what can I do to make the transition into a new home best for everyone involved”?
Are there resources if I am not ready to give up my pet yet?
CAA recommends that every family research all options so that they are confident they are making the best decision for both their family and for their pet. Resources that others have found helpful are:

How will signing my pet up for the CAA Home2Home Program help me?
CAA will post your pet on the website www.companionanimaladvocates.org as well as send out an e-mail blast to the entire CAA database to let them know that your pet is looking for a new home. Should the pet be posted for longer than two weeks, CAA will post flyers in the local community. If your pet is not neutered or spayed, CAA will be able to provide NJ adopters with a voucher that qualifies them for a low cost spay or neuter.
What will CAA ask of each family looking to enroll their pet in the Home2Home program?
A contact person from Companion Animal Advocates will follow up to gather important information such as breed, reason for re-homing, health, behavior, compatibility with cats/dogs, age, spayed/neutered status, location, vaccinations, licensure, key traits and contact information. CAA asks that each current owner be comfortable with their contact info being posted on the website, e-blast and flyer for any potential adopters to contact them directly. Contracts between the adopter and the adoptee are recommended as well as a bill of sale.
How can you also help in finding a home for your pet?
While CAA is going to push for media postings, flyer distribution as well as send e-mail blasts and post the pet on the website; you, as the current owner, can also help! We welcome you to post a classified ad on Petfinder at: http://www.petfinder.com/classifieds/classifieds.html. (CAA is ineligible to post because we are neither an individual or a shelter). Also, you can print and post flyers in your community as well as approach media outlets. We hope to work with you to find the best home for your pet.
What are my options if my pet does not qualify for the CAA Home2Home Program?
Companion Animal Advocates supports the work of no-kill shelters throughout the NY and NJ communities. Dogs and cats that are specific breeds could also qualify for rescue groups which in most cases are a network of foster families. CAA recommends that you consult the following lists of no kill rescues and shelters:
....No Kill Shelters & Rescues in NJ: http://www.nokillnetwork.org/d/New-Jersey/
....No Kill Shelters & Rescues in NY: http://www.nokillnetwork.org/d/New-York

If I am interested in adopting a pet in the Home2Home Program, what should I be considering?
The adoption of the pet is at the discretion of the current owner. While they want their dog or cat to find a new home, they want to find the best match possible for that pet. Each adopting family should be prepared to give the new pet a lifelong home and embrace all characteristics of the pet. Should the pet not be spayed or neutered, an adoption through CAA makes the pet eligible for the low cost spay and neuter program through the state of NJ (if the adopter is a NJ resident). Contracts between the adopter and the adoptee are recommended as well as a bill of sale.
